Engle Winner of 1972 New Castle Open in Sweep

 

Buck Engle, Pittsburgh, demonstrated why he is Pa State Champion as he defeated all opponents in winning the 1972 New Castle Open tournament held at the Scotland Meadows courts in New Castle on July 22-23.

Blair Shever, Butler, recovered from a first round loss and won six straight to cop Class B. Carl Elder, New Castle, threw the longest string of ringers in the tournament. He had 14 consecutive doubles against Vince Sedlacek.

Class C was won by Merle Brightshue of New Castle who pitched a steady 59.4%

Roy Wellman of Titusville, Pa outclassed the opposition in Class D to win with a 7-0 record.

Class E was won by Opal Corbett of New Castle. She had to do some fine clutch pitching in the final game to defeat John Wilson of Sharon, Pa to finish undefeated.
