Zadroga Trips Martz In Vanport Spring Warm Up

The tenth annual Vanport Spring Warm Up Horseshoe Tournament, held Saturday and Sunday, May 22nd and 23rd, was a rousing success as 60 men and four women from six different states competed for trophies in the various 10 men’s and one women’s classes.

Al Zadroga of Elizabeth, Pa upended Clyde Martz of Bethel Park for the men’s tournament championship.  Dale Carson of Baltimore placed second and Sam Sutton of Washington, Pa placed third in what proved to be the best and most evenly matched championship Class A in the history of the tournament.  Competing in the eight-man class were Martz, current defending Pennsylvania champion; Carson, the current Maryland champ; recent Pennsylvania state champs Oscar Engle of Pittsburgh, Jim Solomon of Uniontown, and Zadroga and recent Ohio champ Jim Knisley of Bremen, Oh.  This line-up unmistakably constituted a Class A of true championship caliber.

Opal Corbett of Bradenton, Florida, successfully defended her tournament women’s championship.  She had to beat out young Jeannie Reno of Lucasville, Oh in two very close games in regular round robin competition.
