Engle in Playoff Triumph
for 1971 New Castle Spring Fling
Oscar Engle of Pittsburgh Pa was the winner of the annual New
Castle, Pa Spring Fling Open Tournament played on the beautiful new courts in
Scotland Meadows Park west of New Castle, Pa. It was necessary for him to
dispose of Clair Bruce of New Castle and Ansil Copeland of Akron, Oh in a
playoff match. Bruce finished second and Copeland third. Class B winner was
Carl Elder of New Castle. Pete Vlachos took Class C title while Cyril Enders
was the playoff victor over Tom Board for Class D honors. Class E winner was
George Wintemute of Lake City, Pa. Joe Mancini wrapped up Class F with five
straight wins. New Yorker, Everett Werth, wept Class G with four wins. In the
Ladies division, 15-year-old Jennie Reno of Lucasville, Oh stole the show in an
exciting playoff game with Opal Corbett of New Castle. It was a hard fought
match all the way with Opal Corbett being the final victor, 52-44.
Scorekeeping chores were done by a group of local girls, Cindy
and Mary Buckley, Doreen Spinell, Lori McCullough, Dorothy and Mary Lou Kerr,
and Nancy Hummell, all of whom did a very commendable job. Tournament directors
were Clair Bruce and Opal Corbett.
