Oscar Engle, 1970 New Castle Fall Ringer Roundup
Champion
Ringer after
ringer was made – 37 in a row were pitched by Oscar Engle of Pittsburgh to win
first place in the Fall Ringer Roundup Horseshoe Tournament in new Castle,
September 19-20 at the George Washington Courts. At the end of regular play
Clair Bruce of New Castle and Engle were tied at six wins and one loss. Bruce
had won the regular game against Engle 50-26 and in the playoff the score was
just about reversed as Engle started the game with 37 straight ringers and
finished with 97 ringers to Bruce’s 88 out of 108 shoes. In a previous game
against Sam Sutton of Washington, Pa, Engle tossed 32 consecutive ringers,
which was the most anyone around New Castle ever saw before. The sight of the
flying horseshoes hypnotized the hundreds of people watching!
Clyde Martz of
Pittsburgh who had just won the State Championship title took third place
honors with a 5-2 record and 76.6%.
First place
prize was $50 and a trophy. Second place received $20 and third was presented
$10 and a merchandise gift. The lower classes also received cash prizes and
merchandise gifts. The local banks and merchants were the sponsors. Opal
Corbett was the tournament director ably assisted by Leslie and Wilma Long of
Sterling Ill. Mrs. Bob Morris of New Castle also helped in the bookwork.
