Clyde Martz – Winner Of December Red Mill Open

The winter season got off with a bang here in Washington, Pennsylvania.  Clyde Martz and Al Zadroga, the present and previous Pennsylvania State Champions respectively, had one of their best tournaments ever.  Each of them had only one game lower than the 80% mark, and those were in the high seventies.  Even so, someone must always lose.  Oscar Engle nipped Al in the next to last game, and Clyde had one of his best games of his career in the final round with Al.  In this game, Clyde shot 89.2% to Al’s 82.4% for 102 shoes.

The clutch pitcher of the tournament was without question Dale Carson, Maryland State Champion.  Dale won three games in this very strong tourney, and in every case he had to do it the hard way – coming from way behind.  In the games he won (Sutton, Maroni, Engle), he was at one time losing by:  Sutton 41-28, Maroni 43-13, and Engle 39-19.  Dale is like a good wine – the older he gets, the better he is.  In Class B, Pete Sowa also had a good tournament.  Pete, who had been having his troubles last year, shot a nice 70% tournament.  For years we have been expecting Pete to catch fire.  Now may be the time.
