Oscar Engle Wins January Red Mill Open
Oscar Engle, the 1968 Pennsylvania State Champion, went undefeated to win the first of four scheduled Washington winter tournaments. Even though Oscar had not thrown since the end of the summer, he had no trouble making ringers – especially when he needed them, as Clyde Martz of Pittsburgh and Howard Shriver of West Virginia will testify.
Some
of the highlights of the tournament were Solomon’s tremendous 92% game in group
A-2 playoff with Rich Maroni. Clyde
Martz’s 80.8% average – his highest to date; Cindy Dean of Virginia capturing Class
C by throwing a strong 71% in the playoff with Frank Oliverio of Washington;
and Charlie Semans coming from behind to win class B title from John Ruskin of
Pittsburgh.
