Clyde Martz Wins January Red Mill Open
Clyde Martz of Pittsburgh captured the first winter tournament sponsored by the Red Mill Horseshoe club of Washington, Pa. His closest game was with Sam Sutton of Washington, going 118 shoes with a final score of 51-44. Oscar Engle of Pittsburgh threw the highest game of the tournament, an 87.5%. At one time in this game, Oscar had a streak of 39 ringers out of 40 shoes.
The
most pleasant surprise of the tournament was Al Booth of Washington, Pa. al won class B with an overall average of
67.0% - at that time the highest ringer percentage he ever threw in tournament
competition. Since the weather was
extremely bad and several Class A pitchers were unable to make the competition,
this earned him the right to pitch in class A.
Al then proceeded to have another good tournament, averaging a solid
69.0% (breaking his own personal record a few hours before) and defeating Sam
Sutton, one of Pennsylvania’s finest.
