Shriver of West Virginia Wins Top Honors At New Castle

Howard Shriver of Wadestown, W.Va. won first place in the top Class of the Fall Ringer Roundup Horseshoe Tournament which was held over the weekend at the George Washington Courts in New Castle, Pa. (Sept. 21-22).

A huge crowd was on hand to watch as some of the best players in the U.S.A. battled it out in an 8 man round robin (seven of the pitchers played in the top 36 man class in the World Tourney this summer at Keene, N.H.).

Shriver averaged 79.1% and won 6 games losing only to Dale Carson of Baltimore, Md.  Carson took second place with 5-2 and 77.2%.

Jim Solomon, Uniontown, Pa. also had a 5-2 but lost out on percentage, having 75.9%.  Buck Engle of Pittsburgh, the defending champion hammered away at the stake ending up with 5-2 but a few tenths percent behind Solomon.  Engle posted 75.3%

The local banks and merchants donated prizes and money.  First-place award was a trophy and $50.00, second place - $25.00 and third place -$15.00.  First, second and third places in the lower classes received cash and a merchandise gift.

Teenage girl scorekeepers did a marvelous job, as this was their first attempt at scorekeeping.  Kitty Graham, Helen Gill, Eleanor Thomas, Gretchen Olson, and Joan Rozandki, all of New Castle.

Groundskeepers were Clair Bruce and Wendell Morris.  Morris also was the judge.  Opal Corbett was the tournament director assisted by her husband Ted.
