Engle Tames World Champ at New Castle, Pa. Ringer Roundup

 

          Oscar Engle of Pittsburgh won the Fall Ringer Roundup Open Tournament in New Castle, Pennsylvania by defeating World Champion, Danny Kuchcinski of Erie, not once, but twice, in the most exciting tourney this city has ever seen!!!!

          St the end of 5 games, Danny had a perfect record and Engle had lost one game to Herb Pinch of Sharon.  Then Engle and Kuchcinski played each other.

          Engle was ahead at the end of 100 shoes 45-40.  At the end of f108 shoes, Danny was ahead 49-45.  Engle got credit for another ringer making the score 48-49, then each threw two ringers, no count, Engle made two more ringers and Danny only one, so Engle made 3 points ending the game 52-49, 118 shoes, 90 ringers each.  (76.3%)

          Each had one more game to play which both won without any trouble, so at the end of regular play, each had 6 wins and 1 loss and had to play each other again.  Engle won the play-off game 50-38.  This game went 108 sheos and Engle had 92 ringers, 85.2%, and Danny had 88 ringers, 81.5%

          Engle won the trophy presented by the Sporting Good’s Store plus %75.00 from the various merchants and local banks.  Kuchcinski won $30.00.  Pinch and Sam Sutton of Washington, Pa., were tied for third place and also won a cash prize.

          Frank Peluso of New Brighton won all his games in Class AS to take first place prize and cash.  Bob Morris of New Castle won 2nd and third place was all tied up with Clyde Falk of Pittsburgh and Ray Slocum of Akron splitting the winnings.

          Class BB ended in a three-way tie between Pete Sowa of McKeesprot, Merle Brightshue of New Castle and Clair Bruce of New Wilmington.  Bruce won the play-off for first, with Brightsue placing second, and Sowa coming in third.

          Class B had tom Board of Rochester the victor with a perfect score of 5 wins.  Second and third places were tied by Bill Richeal of Beaver and Clarence Black.

          Chuck Sowa of Ardara, Pa. placed first in Class C winning four games and losing only one game to Ross Hitchcock of Poland Ohio.

          The winner of class CC was Cyril Enders of Beaver with Ed Blum of Darlington taking second place and Clarence Balck also of Beaver coming in third.  Opal Corbett of New Castle, the only woman participating, won all her games to take first place in Class D.
