Al Zadroga Wins 1966 Jefferson Open Undefeated

 

    Al Zadroga of Elizabeth, Pa., won the fourth annual Jefferson Open Horseshoe tournament sponsored annually by the Jefferson firemen.  Pitching a steady brand of horseshoes, Zadroga determinedly repelled attack after attack to go down to the wire undefeated; no stranger was he as Al won the first Jefferson championship in 1963 in a playoff with Buck Engle of Pittsburgh.  Jimmy Solomon came in second place with his usual brilliant pitching with the highest percentage in the tournament, averaging 80.53% and losing only to Zadroga and Wohar.  Howard Shriver, Wadestown, West Virginia sharpshooter, shaded defending champion Jim Ohler of Scottdale and Sam Sutton of Washington for third position, averaging 76.16%.

    In a round robin pitch-off, Clair Bruce of New Wilmington, Pa., won the Class B championship from Pete Sowa, Versailles, Pa., Albert Booth of Washington and Jack Rainbow of Monaca who finished in the order as above, Sowa being the runnerup.

    Class C was strictly a West Virginia affair with Tom Husty of Rivesville downing Russell Wade of Wadestown 50-13 in a play-off game as both went through their class with identical 5-1 marks.

    In Class D Harry Johnson of Garards Fort, Pa., went undefeated to edge out Harley Hennen of Burton, West Virginia; while in Lcasses E and F Wilbur Barnhart of West Finley and Charles Sowa of Ardara were like bulls in a china shop to demolish their helpless and hapless competition.
