1963 Spring Warmup
The New Brighton Spring Warmup Champion is William Penttila of Ohio. Al Zadroga, 1962 Allegheny County Champion, gave a good showing for himself losing only to Penttila in the final round of a ten man round robin. Before the final round it appeared that the champion might be Zadroga. Al had not lost a game, defeating Jim Ohler, 1962 Pa State Champion, and Herb Pinch, 1962 Warm Up champion, while Pentilla had lost a very close match with Ohler. Then Ohler had an unfortunate accident. Something in Jim’s back became dislocated and he was forced to leave the contest. All of us hope that nothing serious had happened to one of the greatest champions Pa has ever produced. Ohler then forfeited all of his previous wins and succeeding games. Zadroga and Penttila then had the final round with identical 8-0 records. Herb Pinch also made a good showing by coming in third, losing only to Zadroga and Penttila.
